How a charge that was refused for payer authentication ended.
A charge at or above the platform’s 3-D Secure threshold comes back 422 with a
charge_attempt_id and a hosted challenge link. If the cardholder completes the
challenge, the completion call returns the payment and you are done. If they do
not — the tab is closed, the link expires — that call never happens, and this is
how you find out.
status is pending, completed or failed. Read it with is_open: a
pending attempt whose expires_at has passed was abandoned, and will never
become a payment. There is no abandoned status because nobody came back to
record one.
payment_id is set only on completed. An attempt that was never authenticated
produced no payment — that is deliberate, and it is what keeps abandoned
challenges out of your payments list. To retry, charge again: a new attempt is
minted rather than an old one reopened.
